my equine career
Q8: When do you wish you were doing something else?
Apart from when it’s relentlessly raining, I don’t think I ever do wish I was doing something else!
Q9: If you could change careers overnight, what would you like to be doing?
I wouldn’t! I would just move everything to a hotter, drier part of the world! Australia preferably!
Q10: What is your most memorable experience in the job?
There really are too many, but one that sticks in my mind is when we had a visiting mare in for foaling. It was her first foal and she had quite a lot of difficulty foaling. This resulted in the foal being born a “Dummy”; he had very little strength, co-ordination, sight and hearing and no real suck reflex. We spent the next 10 days milking the mare every three hours and feeding him through a stomach tube. He started, over this time, to get stronger, more alert and responding to our footsteps on approach to feeding, we then moved him onto bottle feeds and eventually, within four weeks, he was following his mother and feeding himself. When he left the stud at four months old, he had been living out with all the other mares and foals and you wouldn’t
have known what he had gone through. He went on to win In-Hand and then winning just about everything he possibly could under saddle. His owners called him Brindlebrook High Survivor, aka Rocky, and he is still on the show circuit now!.
Q11: What would you say to anyone thinking of embarking on this career?
As with any job within this industry it is hard work, but very rewarding. The mare and foal work gives you great job satisfaction and seeing happy mare, foal and stallion owners at the end of the season makes it all worthwhile.
Q12: What item(s) in your wardrobe do you wear the most? Jeans!!

Q17: If you could own any horse which one would you choose and why?
Sea the Stars. He is as near to perfect as you can get and I have been very, very lucky to have met him in the flesh;he is even more impressive then.
Q18: What hobbies do you have outside of work?
I like to set myself a challenge…. Great North Run, Great Scottish Swim, Total Warrior and this year the Manchester 10k!
Q19: What is your favourite food?
Cheese! The more stinky the better!!
