intro

As spring approaches, the weather is still very uncooperative when it comes to getting horses fit and travelling to competitions, but at least there’s a bit more daylight about and even a glimpse of sunshine now and again. If you’re struggling, take a look at our reader tips for ‘weatherproofing’ fitness work on page 20.

Spring is when thoughts turn to the new breeding season and if you’re thinking of breeding from your mare, make sure you plan a visit to the Northern Stallion Showcase in Cumbria on March 20th. You can look forward to seeing a wide range of stallions and the opportunity to discuss your mare and what you would like to breed with the stud owners. You’ll find this year’s programme starting on page 46 in this issue with information and photographs of all the early stallion entries, stud profiles and advice on some of the things you’ll need to consider before deciding to put your mare in foal.

Our competition news pages this month are even more varied than usual, with readers’ own stories alongside results and new rules for this season. If your club, show or event would like to be featured in Equine, all you need to do is email your results and photographs to us. The email address is on the left of this page, but be sure you have permission from the photographer for us to publish!

If you haven’t met ‘Team Clarkson’ as yet, their latest blog starts on page 16 - you’ll identify with at least some of the goings-on and I guarantee you’ll find it amusing too!

The Big Test this month takes a look at Travel Kit and there’s practical advice on feeding your horse or pony to correctly match his workload, how to plan your worming management and a look at ways in which nutritional supplements can help with skin care. Enjoy the read...
