Northumberland County Show – Schedules Out!

Organisers at Northumberland County Show have announced the name of their Light Horse Champion judge. Northumbrian artist and respected horsewoman, Mary Ann Rogers has accepted the role for 2016. She follows in the footsteps of Lady Allendale, Guy Opperman MP and Marcus Clinton, Principal of Kirkley Hall Campus, part of Northumberland College, which is one of the show’s main sponsors. Mary Ann Rogers lives in West Woodburn, Northumberland and her gallery of original paintings, prints, ceramics and textiles clearly demonstrates the inspiration she draws from animals, nature and rural life. Mary Ann explains, “Horses have always been a passion, and I ride regularly. The Light Horse Championship is once again supported by Kielder Organic Meats, producers of home reared lamb, mutton and beef, from their farm in Bellingham in rural Northumberland. Michelle and Colin Anderson, the owners of Kielder Organic Meats, are regulars on the equestrian circuit in the region providing spectators and competitors with high quality catering services

that showcase their superb meat products. When asked about her judging role at the Northumberland County Show, she replied, “It’s a huge honour, and I’m very excited about it. It’s quite a daunting task, but I shall be looking for the horse and rider who have a little extra sparkle!” The Equine Section at the Northumberland County Show is considered a highlight in the calendar for many thanks to its beautiful location, variety of classes, which range from heavy horses to side saddle classes, and the high quality of competition and judging. This year, there are some new classes in the Schedule. Thanks to the popularity of Retraining of Racehorses Section last year, the show has the RoR/TARRA Ridden Show Series Qualifier in addition to its other two RoR classes. In the Heavy Horse Section, Chief Steward Melanie Teasdale, told us, “We’re delighted that we’re hosting the Qualifier for the Ridden Heavy Horse Society class for the first time this year. This has really taken off in recent years and now has classes at HOYS and Equifest, but there are no qualifiers held in the north; the nearest being Newark and

the Highland shows. It’s a great coup for us. The event will be held in the main arena at the end of the day and is sure to be very popular.” The Northumberland County Show has grown from strength to strength since its move to Bywell in 2013, and last year saw bumper visitor numbers

of over 25,000 and a new line up of livestock competitions, attractions and events. Next year’s show takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 30th May 2016 at Bywell, near Stocksfield. Schedules are out in March.
