Judges Announced For 176th Royal Highland Show

The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS), organisers of the Royal Highland Show, has announced the judges for the 2016 event. The task of placing around 7000 head of the country’s top cattle, sheep, horses, goats and poultry will be in the hands of 48 judges from Scotland, 49 from England, eight from Wales, six from Northern Ireland and one from the Republic of Ireland.

There will be 36 sections in 2016 for the Light Horses, nine of which are HOYS qualifiers. All classes will be judged by some of the most experienced and well-respected individuals in the equine industry, including Chris Hunnable, who is well known in the hunter world and who regularly shows competitively himself. Two other top equestrian judges, David Bartram and Chris Lawton, will be taking judging responsibilities in the riding horses section. In the heavy horses, Clydesdale judging will fall to two breeders from well known studs, Neil Christie, Dalern, Dalfoil, By Glasgow and William Clark, Pitlandie, Stanley. Linda Impey, Chelmsford, Essex and John A Reid, Inverurie, will oversee the Highland classes, both showing regularly themselves. The Native harness class will be judged by retired Invercauld Estate gamekeeper Peter Fraser, Abergeldie, by Ballater, one the country’s leading authorities on deer. The 176th Royal Highland Show will take place at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, Edinburgh, on June 23-26 2016.

Stopwatches to be trialled at all levels in 2016

From the first event of 2016 until the end of June 2016 competitors will now be allowed to wear stopwatches during the cross country phase of British Eventing horse trials at BE80, BE90 and BE100 - including the Mitsubishi Motors Cup, formally the Badminton Grassroots Championships. Previously forbidden at BE100 and below, British Eventing has taken the decision to trial the use of timing devices for a period of four months.

Following feedback from stewards and officials, BE found that riders of all ages at lower levels were struggling to find the correct pace and to adapt their rhythm and speed for different levels of tracks. BE Coaches are now increasingly getting the U18 programme riders to use the gallops in training to learn how to set their pace so it is hoped that the trial will enable competitors to put into practice what they train to do at home.

Under 18 Regional Coach, Mark Corbett, commented; “It is about learning to use the stopwatches as part of your cross country equipment and to help riders find the rhythm and speed that they use in training to then use in competition.

“Speed Training courses from BE will be coming out around the country at all ages and levels to understand how to use their watches effectively and put it in to practice using marked distances.”

Full details on timing devices will be published in the 2016 British Eventing Rule book.
