Pearls Pretty

In Greek mythology, when Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty rose from the sea, the tears of joys she cried fell as pearls. Pearls have always been associated with love and beauty and so it’s no wonder that many brides choose them for their special day.

‘My aim is to make the wearer feel confi dent, beautiful and glamorous’

Here at the Isle of Wight Pearl we have an astonishing collection of pearl jewellery for you to choose from and our experts in the design workshop are available to create bespoke pearl jewellery to perfectly compliment your bridal gown. We asked the girls a few questions about what they do and why they do it…

“When I started here in 1997 having never made jewellery before, I learnt the basics of stringing pearls fi rst. I was taught by Christine Etheridge, the lady who strings the Queens pearls, and I then progressed into designing as the manager at the time felt that I had a real flair for it,” says Colette Griffi ths. “I love working with pearls because they

are the only gem made by a living creature which makes every pearl unique and naturally beautiful.”

Her colleague Annette Edmonds continues, “Growing up in the early 1960s my fi rst influences ranged from Lady Penelope, Emma Peel, Elizabeth Taylor, my own glamorous grandmother May Edmondson, Art deco, nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Georgian

and Elizabethan to Saxon and Roman. I also adore old movies and classic Hollywood which can inspire all sorts of spontaneous ideas. It is the ultimate compliment for a designer when your design is chosen by a customer. My aim is to make the wearer feel confi dent, beautiful and glamorous.”

The third person in this all important team Roz Nuttley goes on to say, “It’s great working as part of the design workshop team and the venue team as a whole. It is also a part of our job to facilitate the venue sales team by for example, making earrings to match a necklace or lengthening or shortening bracelets to fi t the customer’s requirements. My garden is a great love of mine and is frequently my inspiration for designs and I usually consider the colours fi rst then gather the materials and the design usually evolves from there.”

The girls can restring pearls too, so if you’ve inherited a necklace that’s a bit past its best they can give it a new lease of life for you or can redesign the string entirely and bring the pearls back to their former glory.
