WeddingTraditions and Inspirations

A sixpence in your shoe?

Our beautiful planet consists of a variety of wondrous ethnicities, each possessing unique cultures and wedding rituals dating back centuries. In fact, one of the most popular western bridal traditions dates back to a popular Old English rhyme of the same name; dictating the custom to provide the bride with four good luck charms to carry with her on the day. Something old denotes continuity, something new conveys optimism for the future, something borrowed symbolises borrowed happiness, something blue represents purity and, more commonly used in British weddings – a sixpence in the shoe promotes prosperity. The tokens are usually presented to the bride by her immediate family, however close friends and relatives are increasingly becoming more involved in the tradition.

Regal inspiration

The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Katherine Middleton captivated the world’s attention in 2011 and to this day, still motivates couples to take inspiration from the elegant, regal features of the historic occasion. From the lace detailing, v-neck and long sleeves on the stunning gown to white bridesmaid dresses and striking fascinators and with around 1,900 guests on the day, it certainly set the benchmark for couples to emulate. An interesting twist saw the Duchess change out of her extravagant gown after the ceremony into a chic white dress to attend the reception and address admirers– allowing her comfort to enjoy the day without the restrictions of a formal wedding dress.

Shades of red

Red is the colour which symbolically represents strength, luck and love in traditional Chinese weddings. Everything from the bride’s dress to the wedding envelopes are red, as the colour is also seen as being bold and powerful. The journey to the ceremony sees the bride’s face covered with a red veil and a red umbrella is held over her head to encourage fertility, whilst she is escorted in a magnifi cently embroidered bridal sedan chair to the nuptials. The red silk of the sedan is usually complemented with an eclectic mix of bright colours to add to the festive, joyful atmosphere created by the excited guests and admirers.
