Henna takes over
A widespread tradition appreciated by many is the henna tattoo, native to Indian culture, in which the bride and her female attendees are dyed with exquisite designs which represent happiness, hope and love. The intricate beauty of the patterns is world-renowned, in fact this ritual has fast become adopted as a fashionable accessory for festival-goers and fashionistas alike. Tradition dictates that the wife doesn’t have to do any housework until the henna fades, as it lasts for between one and three weeks, this provides a much welcome rest for the newlywed!
The evolution of cake
In medieval times, the traditional wedding cake as we know it today was made from wheat and thrown at the bride to symbolise fertility. Then in Roman times, a cake was fashioned from wheat and salt and eaten partly by the groom, whilst the remaining bread was crumbled over the bride’s head to encourage both her prosperity and good fortune so she could bear many children. However, times have changed a lot since then and now the norm for a stereotypical British cake is one on three tiers, full of fruit and layered with a pearly white icing. The cake provides the main centrepiece of the reception, representing unity, good fortune and fruitfulness for the newly married couple, in the hope that its top tier will be saved for their fi rst child’s christening. Nowadays, there are a dozen alternatives to convention including substituting the fruit cake for cupcakes, multi coloured sponge layers or a square or triangle shape – depending on the couple’s distinctive taste.
