Would you like to have your home featured in Style of Wight’s new Through the Keyhole series?
This reincarnation is certainly clear from the eclectic mix of charity and antique shop fi nds, up cycled and repurposed furniture and a particularly splendid 1950s reproduction Queen Anne drinks cabinet which has been the centrepiece of many parties and gatherings. Most interesting though are the collection of signed lithographs which Mathilde has amassed over the years from an art dealer in New York. From such iconic artists as Matisse, Picasso and Dali, these come from portfolios of lithographic copies of famous works sent by the artists to American dealers in the 1950s as a sort of sales catalogue. They are all signed by the artists as being genuine, which makes for a wonderful story as well as a fantastic legacy for Aubrey.
Family is certainly at the heart of this most imaginative home and Mathilde tells another interesting tale about a painting in Aubrey’s room which has strong family connections. “It was painted by my uncle who was Le Conte de Segrais and a magic person. He taught me to sail and paint (and loved a glass of rose) and was a huge influence in my artist life. The main painting is of two brothers “Les Deux Freres” who were sailors and sat in the south of France in front of a small harbour drinking and singing about women – like all French men! Aubrey will never know him but I hope he has the same spirit of life and love of the sea and be a creative being as my dear uncle Paul.”
The house may be small but the imagination that has been brought to bear on it is huge and in every corner there is something interesting to look at with a story to match, which just shows that even if you haven’t got a massive budget you can still stamp individuality and design on the most unlikely of buildings as Mathilde and Charlie have brilliantly done, turning their ugly duckling into a rather fi ne swan.
