IWLF Summer Schools

As part of the Isle of Wight’s Literary Festival, IWLF Schools Summer School 2015 was held across two days during the summer holidays in July dedicated to creative writing and reimagining the beauty of the natural world.

L

ed by the national author of eco adventure the SeaBEAN Trilogy Sarah Holding, pupils experienced a beach school in Ryde hosted by Ryde School which began on the 6th July with students from Ryde School and Binstead Primary School taking part in a day of exploration,

adventure and creativity by the sea. After inspirational sessions with Sarah on the beach, pupils were asked to try to explain the natural world on the Island from the perspective of a 20cm alien and so ‘Jeff & Jeg’, ‘Dave & The Flufflings’ and ‘Zigma from Zorg’ came to life as characters in newly created stories written by pupils from Ryde School and Binstead Primary.

The 7th of July found pupils from Nineacres Primary School following the twists and turns of local footpaths to gather at Verbum Dei Retreat Centre, courtesy of the Verbum Dei community, before taking a closer look at plants and mini beasts at Newclose Farm, by kind permission of Martin Gardener and hosted by farm manager Adrian Lax.

Both funded by the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England IW this is the fi rst year of an expanding concept to bring IOW school pupils and authors together in nature to inspire creative writing. These IWLF summer schools are an exciting, educational and enlightening way for young children to engage with the Island’s beaches and countryside in a way that is aimed to pique their curiosity and creative ways of thinking about our place in the world as human beings and to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the delicate balance of the natural world.

To follow up these dedicated days with the visiting author, the autumn term CPRE writing competition gives pupils the opportunity to express the ethos of ‘Learning to Love the Natural World’ through creative writing. Winners from each of the schools will receive free passes to the IWLF youth Zone events at Northwood House on the 17th and 18th of October with certifi cates signed by CPRE Vice president Bill Bryson, and generous prizes of book tokens to be awarded by CPRE IW to participants in each school.
