Gas blast man jailed after police smelt out cannabis

A FATHER-OF-TWO has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for growing dozens of cannabis plants after police smelt the drug outside his Caerphilly home. Shaun Bilton, 26, of Maxton Court in Lansbury Park was sentenced at Car- diff Crown Court for his part in a “so- phisticated harvesting” of cannabis. He pleaded guilty to the production

of class B drugs and the obstruction of electricity, having initially claimed the drugs were for his own medical use af- ter suffering 90 per cent burns in a gas explosion. Prosecutor Nicholas Jones told the

court on Friday how police were on patrol last November and attended Bil- ton’s address after smelling cannabis. When officers discovered 24 plants inside, Bilton claimed he was using the

cannabis for his own benefit and told police he was growing it for “medical purposes”. Mr Jones said the house had been re- wired to growthe plants. The court was told Bilton had suffered

90 per cent burns to his body after an explosion at his home some four or five years ago.Hehad told police he took can- nabis to make himself feel “normal”. A month later, at another address in Abertridwr, officers entered a house with a warrant and found a total of 82 plants, some special lighting, and an air filtration system. As the house was unoccupied, officers left a note and the defendant later voluntarily walked into the police station. Hashim Salman, defending, said his client had given “full and frank admis-

sions”. Bilton had suffered a “horrific ordeal” and suffers from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the explosion and had developed an addic- tion to cannabi. Jailing him, Recorder Richard Wil- liams said: “This was a professionally organised scheme to grow and harvest cannabis.” He added that the plants were part of

a “sophisticated and clear staged harvesting set- up”.

Bilton will have

to serve half his sentence in cus- tody and was told to pay a £120 vic- tim surcharge.
