Let’s all paint the town yellow

MARIE Curie’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal encourages people to donate and wear an iconic daffodil to support the charity’s work providing care and support for people living with a terminal illness, and their families, across Wales and the rest of the UK. Running throughout Febru-

ary and March, the Great Daf- fodil Appeal is Marie Curie’s flagship fundraising event – last year the initiative gener- ated a record-breaking £8.26 million to support their work across the UK. In Wales, more than 1,000

volunteers helped support the Appeal last year by collecting donations from members of the public, and together they raised more than £308,000, en- abling the charity to support 2,278 people living with a ter- minal illness in Wales. This year’s Great Daffodil

Appeal in Wales was launched at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on Wednesday, February 11 by Deputy Health Minister Vaughan Gething AM, Minis- ter for Finance and Govern-

ment Business, Jane Hutt AM and Marie Curie Chief Execu- tive Dr Jane Collins. The launch event provided

the stage to showcase some of the charity’s work in Wales, including the innovative South Wales Helper Service. The initiative sees volunteers paired with people affected by terminal illness, offering them support and companionship. Those in attendance heard from Jo Parry, who runs the

South Wales Helper Service, as well as Jenny Latham, who is currently receiving support from a Helper volunteer. The event also saw some of

Wales’ top fundraising vol- unteers honoured for their efforts supporting the char- ity. The Outstanding Con- tribution to Fundraising in Wales award was presented to the CarTen100 group, who raised more than £82,000 for Marie Curie through their an-

nual 100 mile Cardiff to Tenby charity cycle ride. Meanwhile, Arlene Smith

was named as Fundraiser of the Year(WestWales), Barbara Norbury won the Fundraiser of the Year (North Wales) title and Fundraiser of the Year (South Wales) was accepted by Wyndham Perkins on behalf of the Perkins family. As part of the launch to kick

start the 2015 Great Daffodil Appeal, the Senedd was filled

with poignant reminders of Marie Curie’s work thanks to artwork produced by South Wales photographer Patrick Olner.

Patrick spent a year follow-

ing and photographing the work of Marie Curie Nurses, staff and volunteers, and earli- er this month he opened an ex- hibition to showcase his work. ‘Fairy Dust – Marie Curie at Work in Wales’ is currently on show at the Pierpoint in Car- diff Bay. Speaking after the event, Si-

mon Jones, Head of Policy and Public Affairs,Wales for Marie Curie, said: “We are pleased to have the support of our As- sembly Members as we launch this year’s Great Daffodil Ap- peal – an appeal that raises vi- tal funds to support our work in homes across Wales, as well as the Cardiff and The Vale Hospice in Penarth.” Prior to the launch, the Great

Daffodil Appeal got some ce- lebrity backing from members of Wales’ Six Nations squad. Wales stars Aaron Jarvis, Jake Ball, Kristian Dacey, Jus- tin Tipuric and Scott Andrews lined up alongside Marie Cu- rie Nurses and volunteers to

launch the fundraising appeal in Wales. Marie Curie is hoping to turn Cardiff Yellow on Sunday, March 1 with volunteers out in force holding daffodil collec- tions at the annual St David’s Day Parade in Cardiff. The charity is urging as many peo- ple as possible to wear their daffodil with pride during the parade and turn the Welsh capital into a sea of yellow. Sara Bass, Fundraising Man-

ager for Wales, said: “Every year the people of Walesamaze us with their generosity and support for our Great Daffodil Appeal, and I’m sure this year will be no different as people recognise the importance of the work we carry out. “On behalf of Marie Curie,

I would like to thank all those who continue to donate and enable us to keep supporting people affected by terminal ill- ness across Wales.” For more information about the Great Daffodil Appeal, or to take part in a collection in your area, please visit marie- curie.org.uk/daffodil.
