Keys progress after a clinical away triumph

Swalec Cup RGC1404 14 Cross Keys 47

CROSS Keys cruised into the quarter- finals of the Swalec Cup by overwhelm- ing the giant-killers of the first round RGC 1404 at Colwyn Bay. The home crowd were enthusiastic

but it was Keyswho had the better start. Saipolu Tapaatoutai Uhi almost went under the sticks on seven minutes but he was stopped just short. However, an infringement a minute later gave Keys a penalty, and Ethan Davies slotted it. RGC scored the first try, just after the

half hour when RGC’s Harri Evans off- loaded to TomBlackwell who went over. James Lang converted. However, Keys went into the break

with a 13-7 lead after being awarded a penalty try which Davies easily con- verted, before adding a second penalty just before the break, this one from the half-way line. Keys dominated after the break.

Davies extended their lead in the 47th minute with a penalty, before Nathan Trowbridge bagged a try, Davies again adding the extras. On the hour, Leon Andrews broke for

an unconverted try. Jack Condy added another on 67 minutes, which Davies converted and Scott Matthews scored

another, again converted

by

Davies. Despite being

down to 14 men, RGC found some consolation when Tarris Karaitiana went over with Lang converting. But Keys had the

Bedwas revel in easy ten-try student win

Bedwas 56 Cardiff Met 3

TEN tries eased Bed- was to victory over the Cardiff students and into the quarter finals of the Swalec Cup. To their credit the students didn’t allow their heads to drop, even though three sin-bins didn’t help their cause, writes Ian Lovell. The students were

first on the board with a penalty from the boot of outside half Jacob Chilcott after Bedwas were adjudged offside. Bedwas regrouped and

after winning a scrum the ball was moved quickly across the line for Rory Budina to cross out wide, Maynard’s difficult kick went nar- rowly wide. Five min- utes later hooker Alun Rees doubled the home advantage, Maynard successfully converting on the occasion. Arron Pinches made a superb 70-metre break but what could have been a try scoring pass was judged forward. Bedwas looked to in-

crease the lead and got their rewardwhen hard- working debutant flank- er George Lee crossed for an unconverted try. Stuart Thomas ran in the fourth again uncon- verted as Bedwas in- creased the lead. Dan Crimmins and

Rory Budina added tries the latter converted by Maynard to effectively seal the game with only 15 second half minutes elapsed. Bedwas made several substitutions but managed to keep up the momentum, Tom Rowlands crossing un- der the posts, converted by Maynard and shortly afterwards James Saw- yer crashed through for an unconverted try. Budina’s break ended

just before the line but a simple pass out of the tackle allowed Mathew John to add to the scor- ing. Two minutes later a good run from deep by Budina bought his hat- trick try and Bedwas’s tenth. Next weekend Bedwas return to league duties at Rodney Parade home of Newport RFC, kick off is at 1.30pm.
