Police warning after phones stolen in pubs

POLICE are reminding residents in Caerphilly to be wary of thieves at pubs and bars after mobile stones were stolen over the weekend. Officers received two calls reporting

the theft of phones from two pubs in Caerphilly town. With another busy weekend ahead as the Six Nations tournament continues, PC Stuart Lewis is reminding those who are off to a pub, bar or club to look after their phone and personal belongings. He said: “A thief will see a mobile phone as a cash opportunity with the many phones today costing over £200. “Even if you have your data backed

up, have insurance to cover the loss, you still have the inconvenience of being without your phone and sorting out a replacement. If it isn’t insured you have the cost of replacing a very valuable item. We want people to be extra cautious and always be aware of the potential risk. “If your mobile phone has been lost

or stolen, report it immediately on 101 and informyour service provider.”

A GALA concert featuring the likes of Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield and opera star Wynne Evans celebrat- ed the opening of the New- bridge Memo’s renovated auditorium. The sold-out black tie

event also marked 90 years since the Memorial Hall first opened its doors back in 1925. Manics’ star and former Memo barman Bradfield was among the performers on the night, hosted by Roy Noble, performing versions of two of the Manics’ best loved songs – A Design for

Life and If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next – before thanking the Memo for giving him a job all those years ago. Restoration work at the Newbridge Memorial Hall, affectionately known as the Memo, followed years of campaigning by locals to raise the funds, backed along the way by the Cam- paign and its sister paper the Argus. The new improved build-

ing was officially opened by Prince Charles on a Royal visit in December. The Memo is a set of grade II-listed buildings, located

The newly renovated auditorium was packed

just off Newbridge’s high street. It was originally built to commemorate the people who died during the First World War and was a hub for miners throughout most of the 20th century. When threatened with per- manent closure more than 10 years ago, Howard Stone and other local volunteers stepped in to begin the long process of retaining what was left of the building, and to get it back on its feet once again. Mr Stone was unable to attend the concert on Sat- urday night due to illness,

but told the Argus ahead of the event: “It’s wonderful to have such a great line-up to open it.” Applause, initiated by Bradfield, was given by the audience at a packed audi- torium in recognition of the work done by the absent Mr Stone. The concert also featured

Mark Porter and his swing band, Richard Beavis, Sa- mantha Lavender, Robert Knight and Mandy Starr. This Saturday sees the Memo ballroom host a St David’s Day concert with Newbridge Celynen Silver Band at 7.30pm.
