PREVENTION THAT’S A BREEZE

Emerging in many areas of hydraulics (including gearbox applications), both suppliers & customers are required to assure component and/ or fluid cleanliness before making procurement decisions.

In parallel to this, commercial expectations are placing greater pressure on OEM’s to provide extended warranties on their products. Service tools like MP Filtri’s ACMU help deliver this.

AT THE FOREFRONT

Renewable energy has been at the forefront of industry endeavour for some time now, taking the media spotlight for a multitude of reasons. The UK’s geographic location is conducive to the conditions necessary for efficient & predictable electricity production.

Coupled with commitment and financial backing by the government, wind energy will play an important role in our future energy production, with its deployment pivoting around key innovation and decision making in the supply chain.

At the heart of the nacelle (a cover/housing set atop the tower, behind the blades) is the gearbox. Transferring high torque from the blades, to electricity producing speed at the generator is what it does.

Measuring and maintaining this performance is paramount and that is where Gloucestershire based company, MP Filtri has stepped up to the challenge.

COLLABORATION

Working in collaboration with gearbox manufacturers and drawing from a history of expertise in contamination control, the company have developed a range of instrumentation and filtration products, culminating in the release of a product specifically designed for the turbulent/ aerated conditions typical of gearboxes and other industrial systems.

The ACMU (Auxiliary Contamination Monitoring Unit) marries the company’s established optical technology with a range of communication protocols for easy integration with user control systems.

faster response time of 30 seconds was chosen for limit excursions since this will pick up on a building resonant condition without falsely picking up on general network transient disturbances.

highlighted. Reports from the Sub.net also aid initial site commissioning as well as checking for continued grid code compliance.

Embedded Monitoring Systems Ltd

The UK has invested significantly in recent years, paving the way for what is now a leading renewable energy centre (NAREC) located in the North East of England. This enormous purpose built ‘laboratory’ enables both the reduction of green house gas emissions in energy production and a foundation for improvements in reliability and safety.

FACILITATING EFFICIENT OPERATION The life-blood for many of these systems is the hydrocarbon based control fluids which facilitate efficient operation. A turbine that does not rotate is ‘dead in the water’ a statement that is especially true for the monumentally large generators intended for offshore installation.

CONDITION MONITORING UNIQUE CHALLENGE

MP Filtri’s Project Engineer commented, “Measuring contamination in this environment is desperately important for the gearbox manufacturers and presented a unique challenge for us. Turbulent, viscous flow promotes the ingress of air into a fluid.

“The nature of optical contamination instruments can make them sensitive to entrained air and in turn can affect the reliability of solid contamination results. We worked closely with existing and potential clients to eliminate the problem by suppressing air within a self contained circuit, thereby improving measurement, confidence & accuracy.

“With our range of filtration products and a solid customer service charter behind us, we are faced with a fantastic opportunity to grow with our customers.”

COLLABORATIVE INNOVATION Collaborative innovation is key if investment and project success are to be guaranteed. In this example MP Filtri highlight how the success of enormous, media spotlighted projects are as much about expertise and service further down the supply chain as they are through the efforts of the OEM’s & facilities like NAREC.

Both ends of the scale are inextricably linked. With success stories like this we can surely look forward to prosperous, sustainable energy for generations to come.
