THE INSIDE STORY…
Meeting up again with my next guest is likened to a shot of caffeine – a boost of energy and enthusiasm – without the shakes or the
headache! I am talking about Philip Stanyon, Sales Director of Subsea Energy Solutions. It has been about a year since we last featured his company within the Inside Story feature, and as a publication we are always keen to follow the progress of innovative companies and hear how things are unfolding and progressing.
NEW STATE-OF-THE- ART PREMISES
To coin one of the phrases Philip used in his previous article ‘dynamic not static’ there could not be more of a truism!
FAST-FORWARD
Everything seems to be on fast-forward as we discuss the developments that are unfolding and Philip goes on to say they have been working on several high profile projects.
Having literally just signed the lease for a new 5000 sq ft factory, based in Catterick, North Yorkshire this now completes a continually developing portfolio of properties. The project office remains in Richmond, but having gained this additional warehouse facility this now means machining and fabrication, polyurethane, load and pressure testing services and despatch are under one roof.
To keep up with the pace with this dynamism they have just launched their new website and recently appointed an Office Manager and a Finance Controller and are currently looking to recruit a Technical Sales Engineer, so if you’re interested…?
Just prior to our meeting he was on board the MPI Resolution overseeing the laying of six gaskets for stillages and working on two projects for the Humber Gateway offshore windfarm, repeating the project on the MPI Discovery and delighted to report back that it was a successful text book installation and another world first.
CASE STUDY – FIRST OF ITS KIND! Kårehamn offshore windfarm had an urgent requirement for a bespoke gasket to be installed within the fabricated stillages aboard the MPI Discovery (stillages are used to transport goods without the need to load and unload the product being carried, which saves time and decreases the chance of damage).
In this case it was the transportation of nacelles (150 tonnes each). Transporting this equipment with heave motions on the vessel, together with the combination of metal on metal and friction with the generation of heat, this could potentially cause the parts to weld together – not a desired outcome!
Enter Subsea Energy
Solutions – from concept generation, a detailed design and a prototype product (within 3 days) of a 5 mm thick gasket was designed, time now for the technical
speak : dynamic contact pressure due to vessel motion and a bolt torque of up to 35 Mpa. In short successful delivery was made within 3 weeks from the initial enquiry!
ANTICIPTION..
Philip continued that the delight in working in such an environment is the challenge “never quite knowing what the next call will bring…” one such example taking a call from a client from Newfoundland on the East Coast of Canada.
This particular challenge required the design of bespoke subsea buoyancy modules and subsea riser clamps. As with the technical and intricate nature of the beast and attention to detail, Philip flew over to meet with the client to discuss further.
