The solution therefore is the Norbar EvoTorque which is capable of incredible control in tough conditions - producing results within ±5 per cent of set torque, when re-applied to a bolt that is already tightened. However, in scenarios where bolts have not previously been tightened EvoTorque will deliver torque values with an accuracy of +/- 3 percent.
When performing a re-tightening test, the EvoTorque also demonstrated a clear advantage which, when triggered 18 consecutive times on an already tightened bolt, it achieved total accumulated over- torque of around 15-20 per cent of the set torque; depending on the hardness of the joint.
This number of consecutive applications using traditional electric tools would almost certainly result in failure of either the tool or bolt.
CONSIDERABLE BENEFITS
The benefits of the EvoTorque are therefore considerable, offering far more reliable torque results than conventional tools and more importantly, no need for final torquing with a hydraulic wrench. Furthermore, unlike most electric tools, the torque output is not dependant on motor temperature.
The output of most electric motors drops- off as the motor temperature increases with use, resulting in less accurate torque values. The accuracy will not change as a result of ambient temperature or motor temperature, thus enabling numerous joints to be tightened successively with trusted results assured.
INDEPENDENT TESTS Furthermore, in independent tests and calibrations conducted across a number of Spanish wind farm sites; EvoTorque achieved the OK/PAA/APPROVAL standard; making it the first and only electric multiplier permitted to be used to perform final torque on a number of wind farm sites.
The tool is also designed to enable torque control or angle control to be easily selected by the user with a clear signal indicating when the correct torque or angle has been achieved. The EvoTorque also features a third party verified sound power of 72.3 dB (A) and vibration level of 0.304 m/s² which significantly reduces any possibility of medical or health and safety related issues such as hearing loss or White Finger, during use.
EVOTORQUE RANGE
The range is available in both 110V and 230V versions and crucially is weather sealed to IP44 and equipped with a maintenance free motor. The range covers requirements from 200 Nm to 6,000 Nm although the 2,000 Nm tool caters for most applications at wind farm sites.
Another major concern regarding the use of electric tools on wind farm sites is the quality of the power supply. Power is usually provided by small generators together with long cable runs. The implication of which is, that most electric tools either will not run or their torque output becomes erratic. The EvoTorque is largely immune from the effects of voltage fluctuation due to the technology used in the motor controller.
EVER PRESENT COST RESTRAINTS Needless to say, with time and cost constraints ever present in wind farm developments and their continued operational maintenance, simply measuring failure is no longer enough. With health and safety a top priority as well as the real risk to damaged turbine structures and the associated costs, turbine manufacturers and wind farm operations and maintenance teams have a tough job on their hands.
Crucially, the task is to ensure that effective torque measurement and control is achieved from the outset and then continuously maintained through every proceeding maintenance programme.
