NEW SPECIALIST HEIGHT SAFETY CENTRE FOR YORKSHIRE

Specialist work at height and rescue training provider heightec has worked with the wind industry for almost a decade, delivering training to wind turbine and rope access technicians both on and offshore. In response to increasing demand for accredited work at height and rescue training in the Yorkshire area, heightec recently has launched its new purpose designed Height Safety Centre (HSC) in Leeds.

UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH Wind power has been growing at an unprecedented rate and is becoming more widely used worldwide. According to RenewableUK, there are currently almost 6000 onshore and offshore turbines in the UK. With many of these turbines operational or planned for the Yorkshire Area, along with the large round-3 offshore farms in planning off the east coast of England, the call for skilled technicians is only set to increase.

ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE “Historically Yorkshire has been a global centre for engineering excellence. This new venue allows us to further support this specialist client base with more readily

accessible specialist training, a reduction in staff travel time and a consequent reduction in overall costs,” said Keith Jones, Managing Director of heightec.

HSC LEEDS

The Leeds centre not only gives employers in the Yorkshire and Humber regions easy access to specialist skills training, it also offers local people who are looking for new careers in the onshore and offshore wind energy industry, opportunities to up-skill.

SKILLS GAP

Access to such training could help to plug the skills gap identified by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) who stated “There is currently a shortage of 7,000 qualified personnel required by the European wind energy sector each year, a figure that could increase to 15,000 by 2030 if the number of graduates taking courses relevant to the industry does not rise.”

TRAINING FACILITIES

The centre boasts over 8,000 square feet of training facilities and classrooms, with a comprehensive range of training structures including a turbine simulator, a large range

of WTG ladders and a high external tower to give candidates realistic exposure to height.

COURSES

Courses offered include the industry recognised RenewableUK (RUK) and Global Wind Organisation (GWO) Work at Height and Rescue, Fire Awareness, First Aid and Manual Handling courses. In addition to these core wind industry courses, Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) accredited certificates and specialist wind turbine confined space training is also available.
