The Farmers are Back! T
his year Gilroy will once again have a farmers market, thanks to the hard work and determination of a couple of women, Catalina Ventura and Judy Hess. With the support of Leadership Gilroy 2011 and the Gilroy Arts Alliance, these two are bringing local goods to the corner of Monterey and Seventh Streets every Sunday from 10am to 2pm thru November 20. Gilroy Downtown Farmers’ Market will offer local and organic produce as well as other services such as body soaps and lotions, olive oil, honey, and baked goods.
Leadership Gilroy is playing a major role in organizing and funding the inau- gural "Spice of Life Downtown Gilroy Festival & Market" kickoff event slated from 10am to 4pm on June 5. A sampling of the vendors on board at deadline includes Uvas Gold Apiaries on Hecker Pass, Van Dyke Farms in Gilroy, Heirloom Organics from Hollister, Ynot Organics from San Martin, Frog Hollow Farms from Brentwood, Ruvalcaba Nursery from Watsonville, Frantoio Grove olive oil from San Martin as well as Terra Boa
Farm, Vasquez Farm, Lonely Hill Farm and the Rivolini Family.
Non-agricultural items will include Heaven and Earth Body from Santa Cruz, Mitra’s Bakery of Morgan Hill, Lily’s Roasted Corn, Silva Sausage Company and for the children, Amazing Face Painting. There will also be certi- fied organic chickens and eggs from Surfside Chickens in Watsonville. gilroyspiceoflife.com. Vendor fees are $25 for 10' x 10' booths, with larger booths available for $35 after the initial June 5 event. Non-profit vendors will be able to get a booth for only $10, The Gilroy Downtown Farmers Market will be located in the Gilroy interim Center for the Arts parking lot.

JB Farms has opened their doors for another season on Fitzgerald, just north of Gilroy. For nearly a cen- tury and now entering in their fourth generation of farming, the Bonino family is still harvesting some of the most deliciously succulent tree- and vine-ripened fruits and vegetables in Santa Clara County.
