LORE OF RUNNING Why Run?

shape. Soon, though, I discov- ered that I wanted to run because it made me feel good. Later, I ran because I discov- ered a new group of friends who ran, and it was fun to share the experience with oth- ers. When I started entering races, I ran because I received a cotton T-shirt.

I also run because I can compare my race times from year-to-year and race-to-race. I can also compare my race times against other runners of the same gender and age group. I run sometimes because finishing in the top three in my gender and age group might earn me a medal. But some- times I run a race with friends, when I will not earn a medal, but because running the same race allows us to have that shared experience. I run on trails because it feels good to be out in nature and because I feel a greater sense of freedom. I run with my dog because he needs the exercise and so do I.

Sometimes I like to run fast because running fast is, well, how to become faster. I have run fast on a 400-meter track, but I haven’t done that in awhile. I don’t really mind doing speed work on the track—it’s not totally dreadful even if it is run- ning in small circles. Recently, though, when I do speed work, I do it in longer intervals – half miles, usual-

ning shirt that wicks away my sweat.

I run marathons and half- marathons because I receive a high-tech running shirt and a medal. I ran one race because finishers receive a jacket. I ran that race twice. I run some races to visit parts of the country I’ve never seen before. I run on the treadmill when I need to run but can’t get outside. I bought a TV for the treadmill

I run up hills because they are a challenge; I like that challenge and because trail runners need to run hills. I run down hills because they are fun, and they allow me to use gravity to fly down the hill.

I run to stay in shape. I run to stay up with my friends. I run to test myself against bigger challenges, to see what I am capable of running, to see if I am capable of running some faster time or greater dis- tance. I run to clear my

mind, to settle my thoughts, to create new things. I run to receive a high-tech run-

to run with, I needed some- thing to keep me company. Last month on May 14, I ran with friends, on trails, up hills, down hills; I traveled to a place that I had never been before; I chal- lenged myself for thirty-one miles, running six hours and thirty minutes. It was fun, and it made me feel good. I received a refrigerator magnet.
