4TH OF JULY FUN IS BACK!!!! Special to Out & About
participating in the Morgan Hill Freedom Fest multi-day events put on by the volunteer-based non-profit organ- ization Independence Day Celebrations (formerly Independence Day, Inc.)! It’s the same extravaganza of July 4th fun in South County, but with a new name! The City of Morgan Hill remains one of only two cities in the San Francisco Bay Area that continues to have all day events surrounding the fourth of July holiday. The Independence Day Celebration’s include the Firecracker Golf Tournament, the Freedom Fest Family Bike Classic, a patriotic sing, a street dance, the Freedom Fest 5k Run, a classic car cruise, a historic award win- ning parade, a classic car show, and a spectacular fireworks extravaganza with pre-show entertainment. In 2010, the events drew well over 74,000 people. The parade itself is the largest privately organized parade in all of Northern California, and the official Independence Day Parade of Santa Clara County. The Parade dates back to 1876, and for over 30 years the entire multi-day celebration has been organized by the non-profit citizen’s group now known as Independence Day Celebrations (IDC). The parade is truly a “hometown event” dedicated to preserving our national and local heritage and celebrating our free- dom. It takes well over $100,000 to put on the Freedom Fest and requires over 500 volunteers each year to organize and produce this fabulous event.

Fundraisers put on by IDC, as a part of the Freedom Fest, also help support the street dance, parade and fireworks. The Firecracker Golf Tournament kicks off the activities on June 24th and is held at Eagle Ridge Golf Club. It is a day filled with lots of food and drink, loads of fun, and a few surprises on a beautiful golf course. Due to the ever increasing popularity of biking, on July 2nd the Freedom Fest Family Bike Classic makes its 2nd annual appear- ance. It takes place on the Coyote Creek Trail and has a 6, 12, and 30 mile option, allowing ride lengths that will work for every family member. July 4th starts the day with the Freedom 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk. It is a very straight forward course with most of it being tree lined and relatively flat. There is also a classic car cruise prior to the parade, on the parade route for those who arrive early and a classic car show immediately after the parade to get a closer look at these magnificently restored vintage vehicles. Entry fees are charged to all participants. All proceeds from these fundraising events benefit the
Freedom Fest. All non-fundraising events are free-of- charge to the pub- lic.

ties are the fireworks, which are held at Community Park in Morgan Hill after dark. Festivities begin at 6pm. Headlining this year will be local favorites The Usual Suspects. There will also be the return of food and beverage vendors out at the park this year, for those who wish to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a picnic out on the lawn.
