Love Through Deviant Ears EL TEATRO CAMPESINO


E


l Teatro Campesino is an artistic com- munity built on the rock of social jus- tice and the pursuit thereof. So it is not surprising that a coterie of gay artists found a welcome space for their show Love Through Deviant Ears (subtitled “A collective queer retelling of the Low Rider Era love song narratives – A Mixtape: Vol 1”) in the San Juan Bautista Playhouse. The evening is a pastiche of songs, lip-synching comic drag queens, poetry, drama and more. Costume designer Martinez kicks off the evening with a pre-show performance piece in which she snips away at the clothes of a compliant male model who stands impassive-

ly for at least twenty min- utes as she uses her scis- sors, tape and some kind of


white cord to transform his vestments into something that looks like a white tail-coat and a Gandhi-esque loin cloth, then leaves him with the punctuating action of stuffing his blue tie gag-like across his mouth while the audience chats amiably in anticipation of the show proper. An engaging Jesse Salas hosts the show introducing the acts with an only slightly acrid, self-effacing humor. Samuel Gonzalez, Jr., who styles himself L’il Lonely Boy, grabs the mike to sing a couple of pas- sionate oldies with a voice that soars easily into a soulful falsetto. The other legit singer
