Its strategy – making flying in the future more economical, more ecological, more comfortable, more flexible and more reliable – was rewarded in 2008 when the Cluster was recognised as one of Germany’s first “Leading-Edge Clusters” by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The Federal Government is providing a total of 40 million euros in funding to support seminal research projects in the Aviation Cluster. And the companies, academic institutions and the Free & Hanseatic City of Hamburg are investing at least the same amount. Research is being carried out, for example, on the use of hydrogen cells as a source of energy for aircraft and on

presenting both its tradition and its vision at the AIX, too. Hamburg Airport, for example, has a display on the history of the airport, and the Aviation Cluster along with numerous companies have their own stands. This trade fair for aircraft cabin fittings is ideally suited to Hamburg, as the city is a renowned and established international competency centre in the field of aircraft cabins and cabin systems. Airbus Germany is working closely with small and medium-sized companies to develop modern cabin fittings and refined equipment for all Airbus aircraft, whilst Lufthansa Technik regularly fulfils the most exacting demands in VIP

improvements in the noise levels and air quality inside the aircraft cabin; ultra-light seats made of composite materials are being developed; airport processes are being optimised. The ZAL research facility (Center of Applied Aeronautical Research) and the HCAT training facility (Hamburg Centre of Aviation Training) are important building blocks for the cluster strategy. Hamburg’s aircraft construction industry is even older than the airport
conversions. Both companies are able to turn to a highly specialised supplier network within the immediate region. The members of Hanse-Aerospace alone, Germany’s largest SME association for aeronautical suppliers, made up 18 percent of last year’s exhibitors at the AIX. These companies also work closely with Hamburg research institutions. Hamburg’s universities also offer course programmes majoring in cabin architecture and cabin systems. environmentally friendly solutions to improve passenger comfort is very important to the Aviation Cluster. And so, five years ago, the Cluster launched an international competition, the Crystal Cabin Award – the first and, to date, only prize for outstanding innovations in the field of aircraft cabins. The trophies, which have come to be coveted as a seal of quality, are presented each year in association with the AIX. The finalists’ products are on display in the Crystal Cabin Award Gallery.
