Conferences, exhibitions and events – are they worth attending?
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY SUPPORTIVE OF OCCASIONS AND EVENTSWHICH BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER. YOUWILL HAVE READ VARIOUS REFERENCESWITHIN MY ARTICLES ON COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF FACE TO FACE CONTACT.
It is true of the human psyche that without face to face contact mistrust and confused messages may result. I am no psychologist but I do know that in my experience in general management this is borne out, particularly with the advent of email.
Events such as organised conferences, exhibitions and similar events serve this face to face need very well. The problems come along only when some selected specialist companies see an opportunity to make money!
My beliefs have always been to support those events which are organised by associations and organisations which are professional membership based and which are invariably not-for-profit, ensuring that any surplus is directed back to the industry for its future benefit. There does exist a kind of lacklustre approach in the management of some of these not- for-profit organisations simply because they do not need to make a profit. However what is in place in all of these organisations is an elected or selected body of individuals specifically sourced from the industry who sit at regular intervals to set management policy and ensure that it is enforced. It should therefore follow that decisions will always be made in the best interests of the industry it serves.
As previously stated in our launch issue we would always advise that companies and individuals support their appropriate association so that they may have a greater say in the industry in which they operate.
