BEAVERS Business Awareness Event

EEEGR is a business membership organisation, whose main office is located in Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk, and serves the needs of more than 350 companies.

The venue for the event was the well established Imperial Hotel located in the quieter area of Gt Yarmouth’s attractive promenade overlooking Scroby Sands which was one of the UK's first commercial offshore wind farms. Commissioned in March 2004 the £75 million project generates enough energy to supply over 30000 homes.

Again, as we have experienced in other conference and seminar visits throughout the country, the atmosphere amongst delegates was both enthusiastic and extremely positive.

The format for the day was welcomed by all of the 50 plus attendees (places were snapped up well in advance of the deadline date) with short 15 minute presentations on various subjects.

Following a very amenable and tasty lunch John Best (CEO) introduced the various speakers with the message of ‘we are all in this together, let’s embrace the opportunities and help each other achieve what we know we can achieve’ which was just the right note in which start the day’s presentations.

PRESENTATIONS

• ‘Energy – One Compelling Voice’ was delivered by Philip Watkins CEO of 1st East, one of the many RDAs facing government cut-backs - although you would not have believed this by Philip’s positive attitude to the future ahead

• ‘Expanding Opportunities at Beacon Park’ was presented by Robin Neve, the Head of Property Services at Gt Yarmouth Borough Council

• ‘Breaking down the Barriers to Efficient Environmental Design and Build’ was the subject of Maynard Grout’s presentation from the architecture partnership of Paul Robinson

• ‘Energy Skills Centre’ enthusiastically rounded off the proceedings with audience participation by Celia Anderson the Executive Director of Energy Skills

It is unfair to single out individual speakers but Celia made the most poignant and important point which was that ‘it is the people who will make this opportunity work (wind energy challenges) – everyone must get involved’. Because of Celia’s enthusiasm and the way it was presented this important point will be remembered by many.

John Best then concluded and further remarked on Celia’s point regarding people making it work – something which we will continue to advocate and help the industry communicate with each other in the best interests of the industry as a whole (we make no excuses for repeating this at every opportunity!).

Yet another well thought out event in a new and vibrant industry which knows the future holds many opportunities and challenges.
