BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT FOR SMES VISION

You’d never set off with your family on the longest car journey of your life without knowing where you were going would you? So why do so many businesses embark on growing their business without defining a 3, 5 or 10 year ‘Vision’ of where they are looking to get to? Beats me!

VISION HAS A CRITICAL ROLE TO PLAY IN MODERN BUSINESS • Defines what our organisation wants to become, giving shape and direction to our future

• It spells out our goals at a high level • It helps employees feel proud, excited, and part of something much bigger than themselves

• ‘Vision’ directs employees’ energies and provides a guide to action

• It serves to stretch our capabilities and image of ourselves, and stimulates ambition

A ‘VISION’ SHOULD BE BIG, HAIRY AND AUDACIOUS – IF IT’S NOT, THEN START AGAIN!!! Ensure that you involve all key internal stakeholders in arriving at your ‘Vision’. That is all who have an influential position in achieving the ‘Vision’ and who have an influential position within the fabric and culture of the organisation. This is verrrrry, verrrrry important!

Martin Luther King had a Vision – achievement of ‘His Vision’ united Black and White Americans.

JFK had a ‘Vision’ – to put a man on the moon.

Usain Bolt had a ‘Vision’ of Olympic gold which stretched and galvanised his efforts.

IN BUSINESS • Businesses where employees understand and commit to the a Vision and where there is a strategic plan, enjoy a 29% greater success than other businesses

• By uniting behind a shared Vision & Strategy we all win, both personally and professionally

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY’S STUDY ON ‘VISION’ In 1983 a graduating class was surveyed. 3% had written their life goals – their ‘Vision’

In 2003, the graduates were surveyed again. The 3% percent who had a ‘Vision’ had accumulated greater wealth than the other 97 percent combined!!!!

Once you have defined a Vision, launch it with a fanfare, make sure everyone in your organisation knows “what’s in it for me” and promote the hell out of it! – everywhere and anywhere your company communicates with its stakeholders. Align every decision that you make with the ‘Vision’. Review and track progress openly and transparently.

You might not plan on winning Olympic Gold, putting a man on the moon or uniting a continent, but a compelling ‘Vision’ for you and your people may mean a lot more.

Get ‘Visioning’ and be audacious – aim high, get more and who knows what you could achieve!
