POWER CLUSTER
Together Everyone Achieves More - YET AGAIN!
At various times on our travels we have spoken to people who have expressed the need to get together to ensure the success in an industry where vast projects are the norm.
The area which incorporates Suffolk and Norfolk in the UK, as well as European countries, is an instance where this is necessary. We travelled to the Orbis Centre in Lowestoft and met David Wood to find out about their POWER cluster.
THE POWER CLUSTER David is responsible for coordinating the business element of the POWER cluster project. POWER (Pushing Offshore Wind Energy Regions) Cluster is a 3 year €4,998,942 project which aims to help develop the offshore wind industry in the North Sea region of Europe in three main areas: social acceptance, business and skills.
It involves 18 partners from six European countries - Germany, UK, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.
Key activities in the business element of the project include organising business to business events, a study looking at challenges facing the offshore wind industry and what we can learn from the oil and gas industry.
An interactive web based map to show companies involved in the offshore wind sector (known as POWER cluster Mapergy) is reproduced opposite to give you an idea of the area involved.
The project reflects a recognition that different countries and regions need to collaborate to ensure that we meet the challenges facing the offshore wind industry. The project is due to finish in June 2011 and partners are working closely together to ensure there is a legacy for the project.
POWER CLUSTER MAPERGY
‘ARE YOU ON THE MAP?’ Both EEEGR (East of England Energy Group) and Suffolk County Council have been involved in the POWER cluster project from the start. Partners from POWER cluster have developed an interactive map to show organisations involved in the offshore wind industry and their capabilities under a common classification system.
One of the key strengths is that it covers 6 countries from the North Sea Region of Europe. It is a great opportunity to showcase businesses and the expertise they can bring to the offshore wind industry.
POWER cluster Mapergy is based on a classification system devised by Douglas Westwood. It is a great opportunity for businesses to promote their services to companies working in Europe, providing ‘a gateway to Europe’.
Although the UK offshore wind market is likely to remain the largest for some time, there are a number of offshore wind farms being developed outside the UK to which businesses can supply services.
