FOCUSES ON GRIMSBY

THE WORLD

Gautham Balasubramanya, the author, outlined the benefit of creating the poster:

Grimsby Institute is attending theWorld Productivity Congress in Turkey. Within this issue we feature the work from two of the MSc students (Gautham Balasubramanya and Sudarshan Basaralu Krishnaswamy) who are presenting their poster titled “Renewable Energy in the Humber – the step up to commercial scale implementation”. This type of research is being undertaken in the renewables module of the MSc in Productivity and Innovation. TheWorld Productivity Congresses main theme this year is “Productivity at the Crossroads: Creating a Socially, Economically and Environmentally ResponsibleWorld” and we would expect to see renewables and especially wind power to feature within this and future congresses.

The Grimsby Institute took the ambitious step of hosting the European Productivity Congress in 2009 and the Institute firmly sees the role of renewables within the Social Economic and Environmental (SEE) productivity movement. Within the Humber region wind is a major focus with the expansion of offshore sites immanent in further rounds of licensing. With current and future major investment in the area the need for skilled workers is great and the Institute is building this in to its education provision.

“I have been waiting for theWorld Productivity Congress since February 2010 and have made the right choice by coming to Grimsby Institute. My objective is presenting our poster on “Renewable Energy in the Humber – the step up to commercial scale implementation”. Attending the conference will also help me in creating my own network group and understanding the present and future trends in industrial progress in productivity. I can improve on my technical and management knowledge. I will be in a position to implement the technical and the management aspects. On finishing our Master's, we will be well equipped for integrating Productivity and Sustainability in the Renewable sector. The structuring of the poster gives us an idea about the progress, also the interaction with other peers in the conference. We are very proud to represent the Grimsby Institute at the conference.”

Other activities that have been undertaken recently by the Grimsby Institute include a study visit by the engineering department to Scotland to look at some other renewable energy training providers and what they were offering in terms of renewable energy education. There is a 100 apprenticeship in 100 days challenge which the Institute is supporting. The Institute renewables centre had a launch event on the 15th of November where David Ross, Chairman of Cosalt spoke on the need for apprenticeships in the renewable energy industry. Grimsby based Cosalt have origins supplying the fishing fleet dating back to 1873 and are now one of the major providers of marine and offshore safety equipment.
