Norfolk Past, the film from Timereel Studios, charts how life dramatically
changed for people in our region from the turn of the 20th century through to the 1960s. The past is brought to life using rare footage from the East
Anglian Film Archive. Here, we take a look at just one intriguing snapshot covered in the film: Norwich in the 1920s.
Norwich Cattle Market Norwich in the 1920s
Lewis, a familiar landmark on Ber Street in Norwich. Department stores like this offered a massive range of ready-made clothes. Fashions were changing, especially for women: knee-length skirts, shorter haircuts and hats without veils were replacing the heavy floor-length dresses of the previous decade. It was a sign of a more relaxed social code, and that women were becoming more independent.

lthough Britain was victorious in the First World War – the price had been heavy. Monuments to the dead were erected everywhere; a memorial was
unveiled in Norwich in 1921 by Private Withers of the Norfolk Regiment.

Although Britain was suffering an economic slump, the war had caused wages to rise. Increasing numbers
A number of towns in Norfolk had markets, but the Norwich Cattle market was the biggest in Britain. Every Saturday the City was turned into a farmyard, invaded by cattle that were driven off railway wagons and vans and up the streets. The Market was held in the bailey of the Castle, where the Castle Mall shopping centre now stands. The weekly cattle market was a social occasion as well as an opportunity for business.
