Industry 4.0 a Major Focus at MD&M West Seminars
Santa Monica, CA — Building on the momentum that has brought the Industry 4.0 concept across the ocean to the U.S., UBM’s Medical Design and Manufacturing West conference will include a wealth of information on the subject. The seminars will begin with a
background of the Industry 4.0 move- ment with such talks as, “101 Understanding of Industry 4.0,” by Marc Ostertag of B&R Automation, and “Fear Not the Smart Plant: Exploring Trends in the Digital Age,” presented by Keith Kersten of Omron Automation. Other presen- ters include Paul Heine of Sick, Inc., Julian Keith Loren of GE Software, and Brian Fortney of Rockwell Automation. Topics will cover real- life examples of how traditional fac- tories have made the “smart” transi- tion and the benefits of the move,
and how to optimize applications of the Industrial IoT to serve human workers. The second day, the seminars
will continue with a presentation by Carl Palme of Rethink Robotics, enti- tled “Man’s New Best Friend: The Future of Collaborative Robotics and Automated Intelligence.” The rising tide of consumer-driven customiza- tion in manufacturing requires a new breed of flexible automation to be successful — one in which robots move quickly and easily between tasks in order to address the rapidly changing needs of factory workflows. Caged, single-purpose robots only serve a small segment of the manu- facturing application landscape, but smart collaborative robots are now helping to expand the percentage dramatically. Valtronic to Sponsor Day 2 of MD&M West
Solon, OH — Valtronic, a manufac- turer of miniaturized electronic products for medical devices, is spon- soring Day 2, Track A of the MD&M West 2016 conference presentations. Day 2, Medical Track A presen-

The pre- sentations will focus on successful early-stage and scale-up strategies from regulatory to manufacturing and will be chaired by Tom Ulrich, a senior director of software engineer- ing at Tandem Diabetes Care. A topic of importance, the
debate between offshoring and man- ufacturing in the US, will be brought up in the afternoon. The segment will cover the dif-
ferences between regionalized and localized manufacturing, the pros and cons of US versus OUS sourcing, and the effects of the FDA and other regulatory agencies on manufactur- ing choices. Contact: Valtronic Technol -
