Meeting Electronic Product Protection Needs with Conformal Coatings
By Anna-Katharina Peuker, Marketing/Public Relations Manager, Rehm Thermal Systems GmbH C
onformal coating can provide numerous ben- efits in electronics manufacturing. Above all in the manufacturing of products, where the
product has to remain defect-free in spite of consid- erable environmental influences, conformal coat- ings can provide protection for complex electronic components and assemblies. Such coatings can en- able electronic products to perform effectively even across wide ranges of temperature and humidity. For example, a vehicle airbag should always be ready to function reliably for obvious safety rea- sons. Conformal coatings can provide a measure of protection for electronic circuits that makes this possible. The quality of newly manufactured PCBs is
influenced by a number of environmental factors. Circuit boards can be affected by humidity, adhe- sion of dust due to electrostatic charges, or conden- sation. Such contaminants can cause short circuits and long-term damage. For protection in hostile environments, circuit boards are typically treated with a protective coating of some kind. The Protecto system from Rehm Thermal
Systems GmbH can apply highly selective confor- mal coatings to the areas of PCBs that need protec- tion. As Bernd Marquardt, Product Sales for Con- formal Coating at Rehm Thermal Systems ex- plains, “There are numerous areas in which circuit boards are constantly exposed to contaminants or extreme temperatures, often circuits that are part of corporate, automotive or personal security sys-

tems. They are products that keep us safe. Here, the use of protective coatings makes absolute sense in order that a circuit board remains fully functional in the long-term.” Application areas for conformal coating protection include PCBs for off- shore wind farms, maritime systems, military

has been working successfully with Rehm with re- flow soldering for more than 20 years. As a full- service provider, Kolb supplies industrial clients
and the opening of a new manufacturing facility in October 2014, Kolb significantly expanded its pro- duction capabilities at its headquarters in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Willich, Ger- many. In total, Kolb has three SMD lines with AOI systems, two THT wave soldering systems, two se- lective soldering systems, and several reflow sol- dering systems from Rehm. With the new Protecto system, Kolb can now offer protective coatings. Ac- cording to Bernd Buenten, Production Engineering at Kolb Fertigungstechnik: “The demand by our customers for reliable solutions to increase the quality and life of sensitive electronic components has increased continually, so that we have expand- ed our range of services to include the area of se- lective conformal coatings.” Using this system since July 2015, Kolb has
been able to expand its service offerings to include conformal coating of PCBs. Since 2013, Rehm has worked with lacquers and coating materials, in ad- dition to refining classic reflow soldering capabili- ties with convection and condensation soldering
