Meeting Product Needs with Conformal Coatings Continued from previous page
The Protecto system’s patented Stream-Coat® “The list of criteria is long. High output, min-
imal setup times, minimal maintenance costs and absolutely reproducible results are the typical re- quirements placed on today’s electronics manufac- turer, as well as a demand for new ideas in the im- plementation of innovative system technology,” ex- plains Marquardt. At Rehm, developers have put much thought into this and, with the Protecto sys- tem, have brought to market a system that can be integrated into existing production lines without problems. Marquardt continues, “The objective was not to copy an existing system but rather to drive forward and incorporate new technologies for highly selective conformal coatings. Flexibility and the reduction in setup costs in the application of various coating materials were very much in the foreground.” These were details which were also important
for Kolb and decisive for achieving cooperation with Rehm. Bernd Buenten emphasizes: “As we serve customers from a wide ranging industry spectrum with the most varied product requirements, our focus was on a system that could be utilized flexibly, and which guarantees maximum process stability. Protecto has mastered this challenge, it is easy to use, it can be quickly refitted for various product groups and, from the perspective of systems technol- ogy, can be expanded without any problem.” With as many as four separate dispensing
systems available for the Protecto system, four component groups can be coated at the same time or as many as four different coating materials can be applied directly without the need for long setup times. EMS providers such as Kolb, are frequently confronted with product changes, a manufacturing system that can be modified quickly is a significant advantage. Numerous selective coating orders can be filled without difficulty since conversion to an- other component group and another coating mate- rial can take place within seconds, all under com- puter control.
A Protecto system provides flexible application capabilities with as many as four applicators.
The system offers different application process-
es for the perfect coating job. A thixotropic material is applied evenly during dispensing. The spraying process and curtain coating are well-suited for the coating of large surface areas. In particular, curtain coating is effective for sig- nificantly higher process speeds. With jetting, fine
nozzles can process all standard lacquers, from low-viscosity lacquers to high-viscosity lacquers, according to different requirements. It incorpo- rates a new nozzle, developed by Rehm’s industri- al partner, KC Produkte. With an external diame- ter of 2.4mm and nozzle length as long as 100mm, this new nozzle produces optimal coatings, even for closely positioned components.

and precise coating applications are achieved by the quick opening and closing of an outlet with as many as 120 miniature dots. An implicit air nozzle distrib- utes the coating in all jobs with minimal splatter and mist.
Kolb’s Protecto system is initially fitted with
an applicator and jetting valve which permits jet- ting, dispensing, and spraying processes. Buenten explains, “When coating the boards for our cus- tomers, edge precision is extremely important. When jetting, we are able to define the areas to be coated very precisely. In order to be able to cover application fields more effectively and quickly, for example, for our customers from the discipline of power electronics, in the near future we would like to upgrade and expand the coating system to in- clude an additional applicator.” Rehm Thermal Systems and Kolb Fertigung-
stechnik have enjoyed a close and successful rela- tionship since 1995. The foundation of the business partnership is based on a shared interest in quali- ty. Buenten says, “Our demand for quality is, of course, reflected above all in our products, which are manufactured with the closest attention to de- tail, and in line with the highest requirements. With our technically advanced goods-in monitor- ing, qualified employees, quality circles and quali- ty assurance as well as regular staff training, our demand for the highest standards runs through the heart of our day-to-day manufacturing opera- tions. We are extremely satisfied with the innova- tive equipment from the Rehm company, and are capable of meeting all future challenges.” Contact: Rehm Thermal Systems GmbH,
