AUSTRALIA ON A BUDGET

Pass offers good cost savings such as a return fare from Perth to Exmouth for the Ningaloo Reef for £100 when booked at the same time as the international fl ight. “Flight prices change almost

daily and it is worth talking to a consolidator”, says Gordon Lawrence of Gazelle Travel. “Don’t always go for the shortest route and watch out for extra fl ights on a route as they may have lower loads and attract lower prices”, he adds. Recommend travelling between April and June when some of the best fl ight deals are out. While the south of Australia is cooler, it’s the perfect time to head north to tropical locations like Broome and the Kimberley in WA. Malaysian Airlines has launched a new fl ight into Darwin via KL, opening up a whole range of opportunities

Clockwise from top left: A guided walk in the Bungle Bungles, WA, with APT; Kangaroo Island, South Australia; let the train take the strain with Countrylink; get a taste of Australia at the Adelaide Central Market

at the ‘top end’. Visitors can also link up with The Ghan from Darwin via Alice Springs to Adelaide. The Ghan will celebrate the 10th anniversary of this route in 2014 with year-long festivities. Says Dave Atherton, Business

Development Manager - International, Rail Australia: “There has never been a better time to explore Australia by rail, with a brand new range of all- inclusive options.” Passengers booking Platinum or Gold on The Ghan or Indian Pacifi c can now book a package that includes food and drinks as well as a range of new off-train excursions. It also pays to book early and all Gold Service fares booked six months in advance will attract a 25% discount. The Rail Explorer Pass discounts fares by 10% when pre- purchased via travel agents. A comfortable way to travel the length of Queensland, and saving a night in a hotel, is on Queensland Rail’s new Spirit of Queensland. The train’s new RailBed converts from a

comfortable seat and comes complete with a personal entertainment system with on-demand movies. By late 2014 the service will operate six times weekly between Brisbane and Cairns, a journey of 24 hours, costing A$369 for Premium Economy.

Self-catering is an increasingly popular option, especially when travelling with families. Sydney has really ‘gone to town’ in this respect, converting several former hotels and warehouses into self-catering apartments in central locations. Medina Serviced Apartments Double Bay offers studio and two-

bedroom apartments and Quay West Suites have a spectacular location in the historic Rocks area, overlooking the iconic Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. Mantra owns the Breakfree range

of three- and three-and-a-half star studio and apartment properties in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, all offering a low-cost option. Mantra on Hay in Perth is a four-star apartment property offering reduced rates at weekends and Seashells is a popular choice for visitors to Western Australia’s coastal region. Other self-catering options in Melbourne are Apartments Ink, St Kilda, from $99, Easystay Motel and Serviced Apartments from $100 and Staycentral from $109. Punthill Apartments start from $125. In the heart of Darwin’s waterfront area are the Adina Apartments. In Alice Springs Quest Hotels has one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. In Queensland, the beachfront Villa Paradiso is located in the heart of Palm Cove. These spacious

BeachView Apartments at Villa Paradiso are the essence of Palm Cove - the grand property that Queensland’s Palm Cove community is built around. Just a few metres from the beach and the Coral Sea, all apartments are beach-facing with ocean views and are the largest in Palm Cove. Built with solid concrete walls, it remains cool during the tropical heat and ensures a peaceful beachfront experience.
