orget the outdated image of Singapore as a sterile
place where even chewing gum is outlawed along with healthy doses of fun. These days the city-state, a former British colony located off the southern end of peninsular Malaysia, is bursting with attractions and has an action-packed events calendar. It’s still true about the chewing gum, though!
why sell?
Singapore makes a great
introduction to Asia for fi rst-time visitors: it feels safe, its streets are clean, there are some great hotels and it has effi cient public transport. This makes Singapore an easy place
to enjoy, while at the same time its unique multicultural blend means that there is plenty to discover. The Chinese, Malay and Indian
communities each have their own traditions, festivals and places of worship as well as their own distinctive cuisines. In fact Singapore is a foodie’s paradise, whether you’re into fi ne dining or street food.
who to?
The majority of tourists from
the UK use Singapore as a stopover when visiting other destinations such as Australia, Indonesia or Malaysia. And two or three days are certainly enough for a wander through the colonial district, Little India and Chinatown. There might even be time to squeeze in a little shopping in Singapore’s panoply of malls. Visitors with more time on their hands will hardly be bored, and families are well catered for on easily- accessible Sentosa Island. Attractions there include a Universal Studios theme park, a waterpark, a golf club and an array of adventurous activities. There’s also a good selection of accommodation including the Shangri- La Rasa Sentosa, with a private beach.

sell what? Singapore is full of surprises
– who would guess that one of the most popular attractions in this metropolis is a night safari? The city’s leafy appeal increased markedly in 2012 with the opening of the Gardens by the Bay, with its gardens, conservatories and an aerial walkway. For a glimpse of the city’s past, don't miss the Chinatown Heritage Centre.
sell when? Singapore’s tropical
climate is hot and humid throughout the year, although it is particularly rainy during the monsoon season which runs from around November to February. Even then, however, downpours tend to last only for a
couple of hours each day. The Singapore Grand Prix in September is one of the city’s biggest international events. Traditional celebrations include the Mid-Autumn Festival in September or October – a Chinese celebration marked by street parades and fi reworks – and Deepavali (October or November), the Indian festival of lights which sees the streets of Little India lit up.
bed nights Major upgrades have
been completed at the Regent Singapore and the Four Seasons. Openings this year include the
Westin, which offers outstanding views of the marina from its fl oor-to-ceiling windows, and the Sofi tel So Singapore which boasts designs by Karl Lagerfeld. Major refurbishments have been completed at the Regent Singapore and the Four Seasons. As for attractions, the past year has
seen the opening of the SEA Aquarium and the Adventure Cove waterpark on Sentosa Island, as well as the River Safari in Singapore itself.
