Philippines pledges to keep on having fun

BY STEVE HARTRIDGE THE largest-ever delegation from the Philippines travelled to World Travel Market last month with a host of positive messages for the UK trade about tourism prospects in 2014 and buoyed by the re-introduction of Philippine Airlines’ direct flights from Heathrow after a 15-year hiatus. However, any optimism about a boost in

tourism numbers and a new footing for tourism promotion was put on the backburner by Typhoon Haiyan, which, as the Philippines team were leaving London, left a trail of destruction through a large central band of a country comprised of thousands of islands. Jimenez, the Secretary, Department of Tourism, said: “We are in London in force to show the world we are now a serious tourism player, with a direct link between the countries and with new and emerging tourism destinations of our own.” The Philippine presence at WTM was about twice the size – and covered almost double the floor space – than last year. Among those destinations in London

Sorsogon), Palawan, Cebu, Bohol, Boracay, Davao, and Northern Philippines (Baguio, Banaue, and Clark). The Secretary said the Philippines, made up of over 7000 islands, was ideally positioned to capitalise on the growing trend for adventure and ‘ecologically- friendly’ experiences. “The age of going overseas where seeing a Royal

temple is the main highlight is over. Now travellers want to

see and do things, becoming involved with local communities, do things that locals do and push their own margins of self-rediscovery,” he said. Hotels on the main islands visited by

tourists, such as Boracay, Cebu, Bohol and Luzon – where Manilla and Tagatay are located – were left mostly unscathed by Typhoon Haiyan. Philippine Airlines flies direct between Heathrow and Manila five times a week from Terminal Four. philippineairlines.com
