PLAYSTATION’S TOP FIVE E3 MOMENTS
UNCHARTED 4 We were slightly disappointed it was only a teaser, but even a mere glimpse at Naughty Dog’s next game was enough to send the room screaming. And it looks as if the firm is using its The Last of Us experience to create a slightly grittier take on the series.
Sony has its eye on the future with indie successes and mainstream virtual reality
Battlefield: Hardline is exclusive to PlayStation. And perhaps biggest of all is Sony’s relationship with Activision over Destiny. “The game is hopefully going to be absolutely enormous,” says Ryan. “We’re engaging with Activision on Destiny to an extent to which we have never really engaged with any third-party. The game is available on competitive platforms but we really want to make Destiny on PS4 the big thing.”
PARTNER PLANS Sony’s conference was full of partnerships. With Activision, with Warner... even with themselves. The Ratchet and Clank movie trailer saw the firm teaming up with its Sony Pictures division. “Sony has talked for years about
all the divisions talking to one another, and for many years it was all nonsense,” says Ryan. “But this is now a manifestation
of one division doing something that’s obviously in its own interest but also assisting a sister division.” Best of all, PlayStation wasn’t just teaming up with big juggernauts. An impressive element of the Sony conference was the variety of different names on stage at E3. Smaller publishers and studios, such as Devolver, Paradox, 505

Games and Hello Games, were all getting announcements in front of millions. “They are the future lifeblood of the industry,” adds Ryan. “We’re much more alert to the possibility of getting a breakout hit from these guys. People are talking more about No Man’s Sky than some of the stuff that’s costing $150m to make.” It’s a testament to just how busy
Sony’s conference was that it barely had time to mention Vita (much to the dismay of fans) or even the VR headset, Project Morpheus. And although Ryan says the Sony and Microsoft conferences were similar, they were actually worlds apart. Xbox’s was about the big games coming over the next year, but Sony has its eyes on the future – one where today’s indie devs rule the charts, where VR is a consumer proposition and where maybe we won’t even need a console (see TV thinking). BLOODBORNE The makers of the cult hit Dark Souls is building a new (quite similar-looking) IP exclusively for PS4 called Bloodborne. The creator of Dark Souls (and the previous PS3-exclusive Demon’s Souls) Hidetaka Miyazaki is directing the title, which excited the franchises’ die-hard fans.
WHITE PS4 AND DESTINY Destiny dominated Sony’s press conference. Sony announced that PS4 owners could get on the alpha that week, and that beta would be PlayStation- exclusive come July. But best of all was the lovely looking white PS4, which is part of a Destiny bundle out in September.
DEAD ISLAND 2 The big Deep Silver announcement of E3 was Dead Island 2, which was shown off via an clever, darkly comic trailer during Sony’s conference (a video that couldn’t be any further from the one that launched the first Dead Island). A new developer Yager (the team behind Spec-Ops: The Line) is making the title.
GRAND THEFT AUTO V Perhaps the biggest piece of news from all the conferences was the reveal that GTA V IS coming to next-gen consoles and PC, and this year, too. We also loved the fact that despite its reputation there was no violence in the video.
