acing fans had to wait five years between the original BAFTA-winning Grid and its
sequel. Now just twelve months on, a third Grid is being released. Autosport comes hot on the
tyres of last year’s Grid 2 – a game that was popular with critics, but its own fans were unhappy with certain aspects of the title. Chief among these gripes was the move away from motorsports and the changes made to how the cars handled. And Codemasters has wasted no time in righting these ‘wrongs’. “It’s been a very busy year for us since the launch of Grid 2. We basically went back to square

one with the handling – it’s a much more authentic system now. We’ve also included a lot more contemporary motorsports for this title,” says James Nicholls, Autosport’s chief game designer. “We have five very different styles of racing. We’ve got touring cars back with a vengeance, we’ve got endurance racing, open wheel, drift and the street racing which we are very famous for. So a combination of those things gives an idea of what the game is about. “We’ve also re-worked the multiplayer. We’ve turned the progression on its head – players now own and develop a bond

with a car that has its own persistent wear and tear. A lot of work has gone on in the last year and it’s been a fantastic title to work on because the team has clicked into gear. They are very comfortable making this style of game. It’s been very fast.”
A SPEEDY RETURN Grid 2 might have been criticised for some of the choices made during its development, but it helped set the groundwork for Codemasters to quickly make a new entry in the series. “Grid 2 was very ambitious. A lot of stuff had to be built. This
