Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson star in Spike Jonze’s latest fi lm – an examination of how technology has changed the way we live
WHAT IS IT? In the near future, professional letter writer Theodore Twombly is lonely, on the verge of getting divorced and is very unhappy. He decides to buy a sentient operating system to run his life. The OS, whom he names Samantha, soon becomes an inseparable part of his life as he confi des in her. But within weeks Theodore fi nds himself developing feelings for this non-existant woman, and the two start a relationship. It is soon revealed that this pair is not the only cyber- human couple of its kind. Will society accept their strange love, or write them off as nutjobs?
WHY SHOULD I STOCK THIS? This fi lm is every bit as strange as it sounds on the outside, but it is also one of the most heartfelt and warm love stories released in recent memory. Joaquin Phoenix stuns audiences as
Twombly, providing an expressive and believable protagonist to root for. Scarlett Johansson voices Samantha and though we never see her, she provides the appropriate level of personality to the OS. Her opened to critical acclaim, with
praise being given to all aspects of the fi lm. The movie made $47.4m (£28.2m) at the Global Box Offi ce and was nominated for fi ve Academy Awards – but only took away the prize for Best Original Screenplay.
