Insolvency Group has been engaged in most major Canadian and international insolvencies in Canada for over 30 years. Most notably, the Group represented the Government of Canada in the restructuring of both General Motors and Chrysler Canada including advising on the $13.3B in operating and exist
financing that made the
restructuring of those two companies possible. The Group represented the insurance industry in the insolvency of the fourth largest life insurance company in North America, Confederation Life. The Group represents the largest single creditor in the multinational insolvency of Nortel Networks Limited. It acted for the purchaser of one of Canada’s largest
integrated steel manufacturing operations and was active in the restructuring proceedings undertaken by Air Canada, Canadian Airlines and Stelco Inc.
It
represented the largest single lending creditor in the restructuring of AbitibiBowater and represented the debtor in the Canadian aspects of the restructurings of Dow Corning and Owens Corning. Bruce Leonard is the Senior
Partner of
the Restructuring and Insolvency Group at Cassels
Brock and
Blackwell LLP in Toronto. Mr. Leonard is a veteran in the field of insolvency both domestically in
Canada and internationally. He has been prominent professionally in international insolvency organizations and associations in Canadian and international insolvency and restructuring cases and proceedings for over three decades.
Mr. Leonard is the Chair, a Director and a Founding Member of
the International
Insolvency Institute, a limited membership invitational association of senior insolvency
professionals, Judges and regulators from 65 countries worldwide. He is Past Chair of the International Bar Association's Committee on Insolvency and Creditors' Rights (comprising 1200 lawyers from over 80 countries). He was the Founder of and served as the Chair and a Director of The Insolvency Institute of Canada, a limited membership invitational organization of senior insolvency professionals in Canada, from its inception in 1990 to 2002. The Institute has established the Bruce Leonard Prize in Insolvency Studies at five Ontario Universities.
Mr. Leonard is the only International Member of the United States National Bankruptcy Conference and serves as Chair of the Conference’s International Committee. He is a Fellow and an immediate past Director of the American College of Bankruptcy and serves as Chair of the College’s International
Committee. He is also a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Mr. Leonard has been named to Euromoney’s Best of the Best listings since 2002 (when the listing originated) as one of the top 25 insolvency and restructuring lawyers in the world. He has been recognized as a leading insolvency lawyer by Chambers and he appears regularly in the listings of top insolvency and restructuring lawyers that are published in Europe and North America. Mr. Leonard is a Member of the American Law Institute where he served as Chair and Co-Reporter for Canada on the American Law Institute's
Transnational
Insolvency Project. He is currently the Co-Chair of the ALI/III project on Principles of Co-operation in Transnational Cases and is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Edition of the Thomson/West Journal of Bankruptcy Law and Practice.
