WISE COUNSEL Thrills and the next big thing

VOTED MOST HELPFUL TRAVEL COUNSELLOR OF THE YEAR FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS. BARBARA.CHARLTON@TRAVELCOUNSELLORS.COM T: 0845 0587 290

Every day I thank my lucky stars that I sell dreams that people want and not something like

double glazing or PPI claim assistance. Enjoying your work is so fulfi lling and who could not get all the job satisfaction they need by knowing that they have matched their clients’ needs and delivered on their dreams?

HONEYMOONERS It’s especially important to get it right for honeymooners. And today’s newlyweds are defi nitely starting to think outside the ‘beach only’ box, which is great news for us agents. It’s an opportunity to get properly involved with creating their ideal trip. This year, apart from the usual

requests to the Maldives, I’ve had enquiries for African self-drive honeymoons with safaris, a gorgeous Mozambique hideaway and a Canadian road trip. It struck me that today's younger generation are fortunate to do a lot of overseas travel, so by the time they settle down they need to push the boat out to exceed their previous travels.

THE NEXT BIG FILM LOCATIONS Great fi lms can lead to increased travel to the destinations they were fi lmed in. Remember the demand for New Zealand after The Lord of The Rings? In addition, Paris and Rome were popular after Dan Brown’s novels were made into fi lms. Once his latest, Inferno, is released as a movie I’m sure Florence will see a resurgence. I think the next big thing could be the national parks of Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, where Johnny Depp's The Lone Ranger was fi lmed.

LONDON NIGHTS AND DAYS AWAY In July I attended a glam evening atop a rooftop terrace overlooking Hyde Park as a guest of Caribtours and a select number of their hoteliers and tourist board representatives. It was a hot and balmy night and, as well as being treated to a fabulous dinner, we had some great training on some

wonderful Caribbean properties. The following week it was Café de

Paris in the West End for the Selling Long Haul Far East evening. Oh what fun we had! The evening’s cabaret was a trio of Ladyboys performing Beyonce’s Single Ladies. 'Beyonce' was giving it her all, but we had trouble keeping our eyes off one of the backing dancers whose shorts left little to the imagination! We stayed focused long enough to get in some great training on Macau, Shangri-La Hotels and Korean Air. And thank you Shangri-La for my prize of two tickets for the Shard! I’ll be attending the Travel

Counsellors family fun day out at Alton Towers. I'm looking forward to the gentle rollercoasters, like the children’s Runaway Mine Train, and will leave anything more adventurous to my children and their partners and my adrenaline junkie mother who thinks nothing of going wing walking!

HURRY UP HOLIDAYS! I'll be taking my fi rst trip to Turkey this mo nth. But I won’t be going to one of the popular vast all-inclusive resorts. Instead, I’m off to the quiet and luxurious Dionysos Estate, built on top of a jaw-dropping canyon overlooking the Bay of Kumlubük.

“Jacksonville’s idyllic location makes it a great base for visiting the Georgia coastline and Savannah and the Florida coastline,

Barbara and fellow Travel Counsellors at a Caribtours event

"DO NOT FOLLOW WHERE THE PATH MAY LEAD. GO

INSTEAD WHERE THERE IS NO PATH

AND LEAVE A TRAIL" MARTIN BUBER

I booked some of my most loyal clients there at the end of last year and it seemed so divine that we decided we would try a villa ourselves. Feedback from the clients was excellent, and I already have my spa treatments booked in! I'm also looking forward to trying some fi ne Turkish dining. Discovering great local places with good service and unique views is an important part of a holiday for me. Even if your clients want the

security blanket of pre-paying for their holiday, we really should be encouraging them to support the local community and step outside their hotel to eat.

“Get them to extend their holiday in the South Pacific. It’s a long way to go and inter- island distances can be

time-consuming” JONATHAN HART, TRAVEL WRITER
