BY ELLA WATKINS THE BACKGROUND: The Riu Merengue is one of three Riu hotels in the surrounding Puerto Plata; guests are able to use the facilities of all three properties. It is backed by mountains and set on the sandy beach of Maimón Bay. The large stretch of beach is fringed with palm trees – perfect for those who want to escape the heat. THE LOCATION: Located on the island's north coast, the hotel is a 40-minute taxi drive from the airport and set in a remote part of the island, allowing for complete serenity. THE ROOM: Rooms were located within individual Caribbean-style huts dotted throughout the exotic gardens. Two Queen-sized beds and a single bed allow for plenty of room for families sharing. There was a spacious balcony with a view of the gardens, a TV, lounge area and fully-stocked fridge and optics – all included as part of the all-inclusive package. KEY FACILITIES: A wide range of

activities are on offer including water sports, dance lessons and spa treatments. There is a gym and a large swimming pool. Free wifi is included, for 90 minutes per day, in the lobby, as well as in an internet room. A variety of excursions are on offer including to La Isabela National Park and the Rum Factory. Ocean World is highly recommended and just a fi ve- minute drive away. Although expensive, the Royal Dolphin Swim School is worth recommending.
RESTAURANTS/BARS: Buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the main restaurant, with themed dinners twice a week. There is also a snack bar and two à la carte restaurants, a steak house and an Italian (all part of the all-inclusive package). There is plenty on offer for both energetic types and for those who prefer to simply relax doing nothing. A favourite for families, couples and newlyweds. There is a slight 'issue' at the weekends, when an influx of locals create a somewhat livelier atmosphere and the restaurants become much busier. Apart from that, a gem on the Amber Coast.

BY ELLIE BAIN THE BACKGROUND: Hotel Ratchadamri opened earlier this year in the heart of central Bangkok. A luxury property, it is located in the heart of the city's central shopping district. THE LOCATION: Located, by Siam Square, close to the BTS Ratchadamri Skytrain station, the hotel is a short walk from the Siam Paragon Mall, Central World and the Siam Square Market. Sathorn Pier, for trips on the Chao Phraya River is a 30-minute taxi drive away (15 by BTS).
THE ROOM: Our Executive Suite provided a sanctuary to escape to after a heavy day of sightseeing amidst the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. The room was spacious with an open
plan, fully-equipped kitchen/living area, ensuite bathroom, dressing room and offi ce space with complimentary Wi-Fi. The furnishings were simple but elegant with large windows providing a breathtaking view over the city. KEY FACILITIES: There is a large outdoor swimming pool, as well as a gym, sauna and steam room – all you need for total relaxation. An internet room in the lobby offers
