ANOTHER LITTLE KNOWN FIRST FOR ROYAL
LIVERPOOL is that, in 1934, thanks to the foresight of the Captain that year, James Pegram, the Club was
the prime mover in starting the
Liverpool and District Colts Golf Competition. Mr Pegram chaired the first meeting at which other senior Clubs were represented and the first Secretary was Bill Renison (Captain in 1959). The rules
for the competition stated that
the battle for the Challenge Cup - presented by RLGC - was to be between teams of seven players all under the age of 26 (now 27) on the 1st of April of the year of competition. Furthermore, the event was to be an American Tournament – in other words, each team was to play all the others once in singles matchplay during the season. Although the age limit has since been moved up and down and the number in a team varied

from 7 to 5, little else has changed. The season now runs from May to August, 24 Clubs in the area take part, divided into 4 leagues, and the winners of each league go forward to play off in a semi-final and final on the same day. Royal Liverpool has played host occasions over the years.

There were only 14 entries then but numbers very soon grew to the level we see today. To this day the format remains very similar to the original, and has always benefited from the close involvement of RLGC members like the Renisons and McBurneys of this world. Today the competition committee also includes representatives of Caldy, Prenton and Lee Park.
