THE RICOH

ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB WAS PROUD TO HOST THE 2012 RICOH WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN. MEMBER PAUL SHAW WAS EQUALLY PROUD TO BE THE CLUB’S OFFICIAL ON-COURSE AND ON-LINE REPORTER. THIS IS HIS DIARY.

ROUND 1 I’M REALLY ENJOYING THE TEAM SPIRIT, it was great to see some of the guys I regularly play with doing their bit for the tournament. Richard Horner and Matt Way are the Chief Marshalls managing a team of more than 500 volunteers from local golf clubs. They’ve recruited young Joe Madden, our recent Junior Captain,

who’s stepped up to become a Sector Controller. Rob McBurney, Chairman of Greens, is working closely with Craig Gilholm, our fantastic Links Manager. Richard and Matt were busy helping

with the ball spotting and quickly established the key places where the fairways were being missed and staffed up accordingly. On the 11th hole, 38 of 110 players went into the rough and all balls were accounted for. It was a stat that was delivered to me with some pride. Having visited the rough on the 11th (the 9th for Members) on a very frequent basis, I understand why they were so pleased - it really is one of the toughest places on the course. Rob was also pleased that the plan to

help Craig prepare the links ahead of the early tee times was working well. Due to the Olympics, the event was scheduled later in the year than normal, so there is less light available. Consequently holes 1, 2, 3 and 10, 11, 12 are being cut and rolled under floodlights, which is a very rare thing in tournament golf. Watching the golf was fantastic. It’s

a cliché to say that studying Women’s Golf can offer club golfers of both sexes more insight into technique and course management than the men’s game. But it’s certainly true for me as a single figure golfer. The distances the women hit the ball are more similar, so I feel I can pick up lots of ideas about shot selection that will guide the ball around the links safely.
