Hoylake A history of


Hoylake in 1902 when England played Scotland. The event was won by Scotland and Royal Liverpool supplied 6 of the 20 players, 4 for England and 2 for Scotland. The event was recorded in a painting

by James Michael Brown (1853-1947). Brown had been commissioned by the Life Association of Scotland in 1898 to paint a scene from an exhibition match held to mark the opening of Duddingston Golf Club. The painting was used as the centre piece of the 1899 Life Association of Scotland calendar. The calendar proved a great success and Brown was commissioned to paint a golfing picture

The first ever Men’s international match between two countries was held at


en grisaille, a technique using various shades of grey washes that produced a clarity which at first glance resembled a photograph. He used to get famous players to sit for him, and he used those studies to help him to reproduce later accurate likenesses in his paintings.

In all Brown painted 26 pictures for the Association, including 3 of Hoylake - the Past Amateur champions in our Club Room, a painting of The Punch Bowl hole on our links, and the 1902 international match seen here. Prints of all three paintings have hung at Hoylake for many years, but now the original of the 1902 match has been purchased. Brown painted in watercolour and pencil
