IN 1930 HOYLAKE WITNESSED THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY OF THE LEGENDARY BOBBY JONES. THIS TURNED OUT TO BE THE SECOND LEG OF HIS UNIQUE GRAND SLAM, WINNING THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN OPEN AND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS
IN THE SAME YEAR. RECENTLY ROYAL LIVERPOOL ACQUIRED SOME FINE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE EVENT. BLYTH BELL IS OUR GUIDE.
THESE IMAGES CAPTURE THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE GALLERIES AND THE GROUND CONDITIONS OF THE 1930 OPEN. While some of the photographs definitely show Jones in action, the identity of every golfer is by no means certain. It is likely that Jones played throughout the final round without a cap, but it is
possible that some of the images were taken from earlier rounds. The size of the galleries, however, suggests that they are following one of the favourites, and an American photographer would do his best to obtain photographs of Jones if at all possible.
■ Many people will be familiar with this picture of Bobby Jones being presented with the Golf Championship Trophy by J.G.B. Beazley, our 1930 Captain - while members and visitors to Hoylake will be aware of the picture on display in the Clubhouse bearing a note of thanks from Jones to RLGC Secretary, Guy Farrar. Farrar scored for Jones in the final round and witnessed every shot he played.
