A good time was had by all
LAST YEAR, HOYLAKE WELCOMED MANY OF OUR NORTH AMERICAN FRIENDS on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th September to contest the Atlantic Trophy for the fifth time.

was represented by teams of two golfers and Captained by Steve Sayre of The Country Club, Brookline.

34 Hoylake golfers should have played one fourball and two foursomes matches. However, once again,
match format was disrupted -
the weather intervened and the trade in wet
weather clothing in the Professional’s shop was brisk. However, undaunted and led bravely by our intrepid Captain, Blyth Bell, the Hoylake

players managed to distinguish themselves and, despite stories of the tricks that wind can play with golf balls, managed to win the Atlantic Trophy by a narrow margin. At dinner that night in the Clubhouse, the
Atlantic Trophy was presented to the Captain by Steve Sayre on behalf of the North American competitors, amidst speeches full of gentle historical satire recalling the attitude of King George I, II, and III, to our American cousins, the Boston Tea Party and, to round things off, the duplicity of the French for supporting the Americans in their battle for independence. It was a great shame that play was reduced;
nevertheless, once again Royal Liverpool Golf Club did much to make and renew lasting relationships with many fine North American golf clubs that respect and support the great traditions of golf. ■
