Women’s

Sue GreenhalGh recallS a memorable trip to the united StateS

In OctOber 2012 a team Of sIx ladIes and a reserve travelled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to take part in the WITC event at Southern Hills Country Club. The RLGC team included the Captain of the Ladies, Sue Greenhalgh, Joyce Tuomey, April Stern, Gina Withinshaw, Julia Leary, and Jo Fish. Shirley Wynn Jones came as a reserve. This event was founded in 2010 by a

group of American clubs and Ireland’s Lahinch Golf Club to promote women’s golf on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2012 Royal Liverpool and Nairn were invited to join them, making the total up to eight clubs. The clubs are Fishers

Island, Merion, Southern Hills Country Club, The Olympic Club, The Country Club, Lahinch, Royal Liverpool, and Nairn. We were treated to four wonderful days

course being totally different from Royal Liverpool with no rough, but plenty of

trees and water. Every green was guarded by numerous bunkers, and when we did get on to the greens they were like glass, so two putting was a real challenge. The format was Stableford, each club trying to accumulate the most points over two days. The Americans loved the fact that Dr. Stableford had been a member of our Club. The host club was the eventual winner, and Royal Liverpool came a respectable sixth, beating Lahinch, and Nairn. The clubhouse at Southern Hills was

magnificent, and had recently been refurbished. We ate there each evening, three in all, and enjoyed a final lunch,
