JUNIOR

2012 PROVED TO BE A REMARKABLE YEAR FOR JUNIOR GOLF AT RLGC. At a time when many clubs, locally and nationally, are reporting a decline in the number and quality of junior golfers, Hoylake is proud to have some truly exceptional young players. The year began in promising fashion

when the RLGC Junior Team captured the ‘Quadrangular Trophy’ played over the Hoylake links against teams from Formby, West Lancs and Wallasey. Following the draw upon arrival, the two winning teams of the morning matches then compete in the final that afternoon. A thrilling deciding game saw Tom De Boorder win on the third extra hole to clinch the trophy. There is no shortage of competitions

for Juniors to take part in. Weekly Stablefords during the school holidays, Wirral League matches, local Open Competitions and friendly matches

50 ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB MAGAZINE 2013

are arranged against Royal St Davids, Harlech and Sandiway. These all help to improve the standard of play as well as golfing and social etiquette. Throughout the season, the Wirral

League matches take the focus as we take on our neighbouring Clubs either home or away. Early losses away at Prenton and Bromborough were soon forgotten as we embarked on a winning streak that saw victories against Heswall, Wallasey, Bidston and Eastham Lodge as well as a half against Caldy. These matches present a wonderful opportunity for our juniors to experience other courses locally as well as to get to know fellow competitors from the region. Every match concludes with a formal meal in the dining room and so sincere thanks must go to Sean and the catering team for their continued support and hard work in providing great food and service for the Junior Team. Once again, Junior Week in late July

MATTHEW WAY LOOKS BACK AT ANOTHER FINE YEAR FOR

HOYLAKE’S JUNIORS

proved to be a great success despite being somewhat truncated due to the impending Ricoh Women’s British Open. This year saw three days of competitions, coaching by John Heggarty, Matt and Josh, a barbeque and presentation to finish. The Junior Golf Week is always popular and very well supported. It offers a great opportunity for the Juniors to reduce their handicaps and get to know and play with fellow Junior Members. The help given by John and his staff is greatly appreciated by all the Junior Section, not only during Junior Golf Week but also throughout the year. The Championship Course Meeting,

held in early July, gives the Members an opportunity to play the links at their most testing. Breaking 90 could be regarded as an achievement and breaking 80 is definitely so for any amateur. This year, Matt Jordan (at 16 years old) managed a three under par 69, a simply outstanding performance. Proving it to be no fluke, he followed it up seven days later in the Summer Meeting with a sublime 65 on the Green Course, including just 21 putts! Matt continues to work hard on his game and we look forward to following his progress over the coming months and years. Freya Johnson is another wonderfully

talented Junior Member that has seen her handicap tumble from 22 to 12 during 2012. At 13 years old, she has successfully negotiated England Golf trials for a place in one of the elite training squads - one of only 96 in the country to made the grade. In August a team of 7 competed for
