BLYTH BELL LOOKS BACK AT A MEMORABLE YEAR IN OFFICE

THE ADVENTURE OF CAPTAINCY - which began at the AGM in March and ended recently in a flurry of winter dinners at golf clubs in the North West - is now over and it is time to reflect. The support and encouragement I’ve received from both the membership and staff of Royal Liverpool has been wonderful and I can’t thank them enough. Early speeches at the Winter League

dinner, Wallasey and West Lancs passed without adversity and were the ideal warm-up for our own Spring Dinner. Alistair Lowe, the Captain of the R&A, was our principal guest, and it was a pleasure to be able to host him on behalf of the Club. Undoubtedly preoccupied by the events of the evening to come our golf was eminently forgettable, but the dinner was a great success. The manner in which we entertained our guests that night made me so proud and was to be repeated on many other occasions as the year progressed. An invitation to attend the Curtis Cup

at Nairn was gratefully accepted and we were royally entertained. This was to be an early season exposure to the high quality of the modern ladies game and resulted in a thrilling victory for the GB&I team. Back on the home front the

engagements were coming thick and fast. I golfed and dined with the Liverpool University Alumni and the British Golf Collectors Society and represented Scotland unsuccessfully in the Home Internationals. Each event in its own way
