n The approach putt to the Hilbre green, the sparse, dry rough in the foreground.

n Jones putts out on the Dowie green, quite different to its design in 2013. Through the gallery in the foreground we can see the out of bounds cop which lay just to the left of the green.

A chance visit to the USGA Museum photo archive in late 2010 led to the discovery of some unfamiliar images from the 1930 Open. The picture of a green appeared on the introductory page and, although it had no title, it was definitely the Alps at Hoylake. A copy on canvas now hangs in the men’s locker room.

The image of the drive from the Hilbre tee appeared on the cover of a contemporary Jones biography of 2007 and further correspondence with the USGA revealed four more photographs from their archive of the Championship. I would like to think that all the pictures were of Bobby Jones, although perhaps from different rounds.

We are indebted to the USGA who gave us permission to reproduce them.
