Out and About Portland
Montreux Jazz Café Harrods, London, UK
1
London has recently become the home of the first Montreux Jazz Café in the UK. Portland was tasked with helping to create the perfect space on the third floor of London’s Harrods.
Portland specialises in creating environments for retail, leisure and travel sectors. The team has been working with The Montreux Jazz Festival on the development of The Montreux Jazz Café, which is now situated on the third floor at London’s iconic Harrods department store. The hybrid café and retail concept was launched as a new flagship for the brand. There are already two cafés in Zurich and Geneva, but it was felt that a new design concept was needed to refresh the brand and to springboard it into further global expansion. Lewis Allen, Director of Environments at
Portland comments; “The idea of the café is to bring people closer to the experience of what The Montreux Jazz Festival is all about the feeling of being personally alive that live music inspires. It is essential to make the brand emotionally accessible to people and to emphasise the festival’s focus on uncompromisingly high standards of musical performance, both creatively and acoustically”. As well as offering a café serving a Swissinspired range of drinks and light

food, there is also a retail space selling festivalrelated products such as archive material, DVDs, and Montreux Jazzbranded clothes and fashion accessories, as well as posters and seminal graphic art. Portland developed a concept that was
inspired by a Swiss chalet owned by the Montreux Jazz Festival Founder, Claude Nobs. There is also a strong focus on the unique musical heritage that the festival is intertwined with. As well as planning and designing the space, Portland also created the tone of voice for all of the retail and café communications. “This project represents the true
convergence of retail, F&B and entertainment whilst reproducing an element of the intimacy and excitement of the festival in a retail context,” says Ibrahim Ibrahim, Managing Director at Portland.
